Info:
Richie Hawtin’s triumphant return to the stage as Plastikman in 2010 proved that his best-known alias is as innovative and as relevant as ever. Hawtin has taken Plastikman’s most classic material, originally released between 1993 and 2003, and reworked it for a truly live performance accompanied by mind-bending, synchronized visuals—a sound and light show like no other, one that collapses the distance between present-day festivals and the uncompromisingly underground warehouse parties of the mid ’90s.

For many attendees, this is their first taste of Plastikman. Since 2003, Hawtin has been far better known simply as Richie Hawtin, the celebrated DJ and mastermind behind the Minus label. Some fans today were still infants when Plastikman’s acid ripple first began streaming from Hawtin’s basement studio in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

For long-time devotees and new fans alike, Hawtin now presents Plastikman’s Arkives, a comprehensive box set that pulls together all 17 years of the Plastikman story so far, including remastered versions of all six previously released Plastikman albums and a trove of rarities, unreleased sessions and new material.

Arkives, which is a strictly limited, made-to-order edition—only as many copies will be manufactured as have been pre-ordered—will be released in four different formats:

Reference (11-disc CD/DVD/book edition)
Analog (6 records on 180-gram vinyl in a deluxe box, with poster), Digital (digital download version)
Collection (including all CDs, vinyl, book, DVD, and bonus digital downloads)

Arkives Reference, the main personalized edition, features 11 CDs and 1 DVD. The deluxe packaging includes a slipcase with foldout sleeves for all 12 discs, plus a 64-page book that tells the Plastikman story in archival photos and a newly commissioned text. The set includes newly remastered versions of all six previously released Plastikman albums—Sheet One, Musik, Recycled Plastik, Consumed, Artifakts (B.C.), and Closer—and five further CDs of rare and unreleased material:

Rekonstruktions collects Plastikman’s classic and hard-to-find remixes for other artists, including La Funk Mob, System 7, New Order, Depeche Mode, Hardfloor, and even an unreleased remix of his own Robotman project.

Replikants features all-new remixes specially commissioned for the project, in which Hawtin’s influences and heroes rework Plastikman’s back catalog. Reaching far beyond the world of techno, the disc features luminaries such as Vince Clarke, Cliff Martinez, François Kevorkian, Moby, Chris & Cosey, Severed Heads, Flood, and Mute’s Daniel Miller & Gareth Jones.

Two further CDs contain previously unreleased material. One features the never-before heard, complete recording session from which “Spastik” emerged, along with an unreleased John Peel in-studio live session. Still more previously unreleased Plastikman material follows on the second of these CDs, including the soon-to-be-released single “Slinky.”

Finally, Nostagik collects rare, out-of-print, vinyl-only editions and bonus Plastikman tracks.

In addition to the CDs, Optik is a DVD of classic & rare Plastikman videos plus previously unreleased footage of Plastikman live at Glastonbury, 1995 and Plastikman live at Mutek, Montreal, 2003.

Arkives Reference also includes a digital download code redeemable at m-nus.com, which will unlock additional material not included on the CDs (or other Arkives editions), insuring that each collector receives the most complete Plastikman Arkives to date.

In addition.

Arkives Analog features 6 pieces of 180 gram vinyl, exclusive tracks and a limited edition poster, presented in a deluxe custom box.

Arkives Digital will be the online download version of the project. Offering a ‘lite’ version of the package including a limited selection of the material found in Reference and Analog editions.

And last but not least, for the most decerning Plastikman fans, m-nus.com will feature an exclusive combination package, Arkives Collection, containing both the Reference and Analog editions.

Special extra bonus incentives will be offered to those who order Arkives Reference or Arkives Collection early at m-nus.com.

Just as Hawtin and his crew used to cap admission to their underground parties, Arkives’ edition will be strictly limited to the pre-orders received. It’s a once in a lifetime chance to experience the full sweep of Plastikman’s journey so far.

Info:
Chris Liebing and the CLR team are very exited about the upcoming release of CLR 049. The ENGINE EP by BLACK ASTEROID is the brand-new project of an artist who has been an unconventional techno innovator and a big inspiration for many years.

Black Asteroid is the brainchild of Bryan Black, who started his career as a sound designer for Prince. While working with Prince at Paisley Park Studios, Bryan learned and honed sound and production skills, which inspired him to start his own band. He moved to London England and co-founded a band called MOTOR. Their first demo was quickly signed to Novamute, and after 2 singles, MOTOR were catapulted to the top of the techno world, sharing stages with Daft Punk and Kraftwerk at major festivals, and later embarking on a World tour supporting Depeche Mode in 2009.

In April 2011, Bryan decided to start a new project by the name of BLACK ASTEROID, to showcase an exciting new sound and to re-capture the techno world once more. That was the moment when Chris Liebing came into the picture, and he recalls it as follows: “Of course I have always been a fan of Novamute, and one day I had this ‘Motor’ track called Sweatbox in my hands and loved it so much, that I called Novamute and asked if I could remix it. The result was the release of a single sided vinyl that came out in the end of 2005. What I really liked about the Original was the ‘out of the ordinary’ techno approach that Motor had…., and still has. For my remix, I actually only added a bassdrum…

6 years later I find this demo mail by Motor mastermind Bryan Black in my inbox, with a 4 track project called BLACK ASTEROID. He kept following what was happening on CLR and thought it was a good idea to send me the new tracks he has done. What a great idea! Very soon the next day, our whole office in Berlin was dancing and the neighbours were complaining.

I am excited and happy that Bryan has chosen CLR in order to get his tracks out and that we can continue the story, which started back in 2005. Loads of musical adventures lie ahead of us and I am happy to have Bryan Black on board!”

This debut EP of BLACK ASTEROID was written in only 1 week. Then it was mixed in the following week and signed to CLR a week later. An early demo version of “Engine 1” even made it to one of the highest ranks in Dave Clarke’s monthly top ten, long before any promos were sent out. It almost seems as if this music was in a hurry to be out there, and if you listen to it, it won’t surprise you at all. The ENGINE EP consists of nothing but pure POWER.

Techno pioneer Orlando Voorn re-releases The Nighttripper project

One of the most influential founders of the Dutch techno scene, Orlando Voorn, will re-release two of his biggest singles under his alter ego The Nighttripper end of 2010 with brand new mixes. In collaboration with Dutch techno imprint Underground Liberation, Orlando Voorn presents the rebirth of “Tone Exploitation” and “Phuture”, still considered as all time techno classics, in new versions by an exciting list of techno producers. Respectively end of July 2011 and mid August 2011, “Tone Exploitation” and “Phuture” will be globally available as a vinyl release and as digital download.

Orlando Voorn was one of the first Dutch musicians to establish a vital connection between Detroit and Amsterdam in the early 90’s and has long been recognized as one of the Netherland’s most original and ingenious producers in the world of electronic dance music. At a young age, Orlando Voorn was discovered by Dutch Radio host Robin Albers who was in charge of the Dutch DMC DJ Championship 1986. Surprisingly Voorn placed first in the Dutch competitions 1986 and 1987 for Holland which placed him in the world championships of DMC twice in the United Kingdom where he came in 3rd place and 5th place. His characteristic blend of hip hop and electro music in his DJ sets soon were translated into his first productions, released under Fixomatic in the late 80’s.

His extensive discography consists of an outstanding amount of releases, vastly contributing to both the Dutch as well as the international techno scene and are effortlessly able to level with Detroit’s finest such as Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. The list of labels carrying Orlando Voorn productions and remixes is impressive to say the least. Derrick May’s label Fragile, Juan Atkins’ imprint Metroplex, Kevin Saunderson’s KMS, Richie Hawtin’s label Plus 8, techno institution R&S Records, the German label Low Spirit Recordings and Dutch flag bearer of techno ESP is just a small tip of the immense iceberg.

Showing his visionary versatility, Orlando Voorn goes behind a string of alter egos. As Format #1 (Solid Session), Frequency (Where is Your Evidence, Kiss the Sky), Playboy (In Da Jungle), Fix (Flash) and The Nighttripper (Tone Exploitation, Phuture), Orlando Voorn reached immortal status with all tracks mentioned still being caned during DJ sets on classic house events. With the re-release of Tone Exploitation and Phuture as The Nighttripper, Orlando Voorn is sure to once again carve a path in the international techno landscape.

Orlando Voorn and Underground Liberation selected none the less than a.o. Kevin Saunderson, Ken Ishii, Robert Armani, Luke Slater (Planetary Assault Systems), Robert Hood, Ben Sims, DJ T-1000, Suburban Knight and Ritzi Lee to deliver new versions of Tone Exploitation and Phuture. These remix packs, to be released separately, will respectively be available end of July 2011 and mid August 2011 in music stores worldwide on limited vinyl, and as digital download on globally acclaimed portals like iTunes, Beatport, Traxsource and Juno Download.

Press Info :
T. RAUMSCHMIERE (Berlin). In the 90’s, industrial, punk rock and hardcore gave Marco Haas (aka T.Raumschmiere) his first musical direction. In 2003, he was releasing the famous “Monstertruckdriver”, and “The Game Is Not Over (feat. Miss Kittin)” ; the same year, his live and his
own label Shitkatapult were listed in several Reader Poll Top 10s. This was followed by remixes for especially the prestigious Dave Gahan (singer of Depeche Mode, editor’s note) and Goldfrapp. After touring continuously since 2003, Raumschmiere is releasing his next Ep, called “The Rave Is On” (TR.I.O.) in November 2010 on the record label from Bordeaux Boxon Records.

The “T.R.I.O.” EP has three electro tracks : “The Rave Is On”, “Entertain Me”, and “Duster”. Every music addict will be happy with this pack, as the two first ones have been composed especialy for the dancefloor, and “Duster” being more experimental. T.Raumschmiere, who is a really big name on the electronic music scene, is coming back with these three new and awesome productions, each track being a real piece of art. Julien Minet (Boxon owner, editor’s note) is a long time fan of T.Raumschmiere’s work; then Marco and Julien got along really well with each other (that was back in 2009, in France, during the Free Music Festival in Montendre, and at the Travesti Monsters party at Bikini in Toulouse, editor’s note); so it became obvious for them to concretize this project, and we thanks them a lot ! To listen, and listen again : you will be addicted a long time to these tracks…

Info :
Underwater techno. That could be ‘Leaning Over Backwards’ in just two words. Tobias Freund’s debut album for Ostgut Ton also serves as the long player introduction for his tobias. moniker, giving a fascinating and profound insight into his special world of music and sound science. Having been involved in the music industry since 1980, you could easily fill tomes with his work and creations. Formerly based in Frankfurt am Main and for a few years now happily living in Berlin, tobias. started his quest in sound as a synth experimentalist with a Korg MS20, worked a day job as a studio engineer (for acts as diverse as Milli Vanilli and more recently Aerea Negrot, Ellen Allien, Nina Kraviz and Heartthrob amongst others), remixed, released as Pink Elln or in collaborative projects Sieg über die Sonne and NSI. (together with Max Loderbauer) and runs his own label Non Standard Productions. But that’s beside the point, even if tobias. does bring friends, old and new, on his debut album. Named after a lyric from a Wire song, ‘Leaning Over Backwards’
suggests the feeling one gets when doing exactly that, bent over a rail, testing how long you can possibly do it before gravity takes hold, toppling you over. In this case it can last forever. Amongst other things, tobias. renounces the ubiquitous dictate of computer sequencing. Reduced to a plain recording device, the computer makes way for the classic drum machines Roland TR 808 and a Korg Mini Pops. Known for their stubbornness, the character brought by unpredictability wins over standardised convenience. Tobias’ sound is rewarded with a dynamism that doesn’t forego attention to detail, accuracy of sound or thoughtfulness.

Rooted in jam sessions with just beats and FX units, the mood and sound of the tracks on ‘Leaning Over Backwards’ follow these parameters. The results are sometimes unswerving club tracks (‘Skippy’, ‘Party Town’, ‘We Stick to the Plan’), occasionally an ambient or drone-like atmosphere (‘Zero Tolerance’, ‘Observing The Hypocrites’) or a hybrid of the two, as in the title track. All united by the imagery of “being underwater” that is apparent from the start with ‘Girts’. Take ‘The Key’ for instance; produced in Santiago by Tobias and his long standing colleague Uwe Schmidt aka
AtomTM, you can listen to splintered beats and gloomy pads submerging into the Drexciyan depths. It all comes full circle with ‘Now I Know’. Both fantastical and fey, tobias. once again makes use of Aerea Negrot’s (from Hercules & Love Affair) powerful vocals. As before on ‘Party Town’ or ‘Zero Tolerance’, Negrot is the icing on the cake, turning the album closer into a yearning slice of Blade Runner-esque pop.

‘Leaning Over Backwards’ insists and bewitches with its nonconformity and almost frightening idiosyncrasy. tobias. creates a style of techno that is as far away from the steam roller kicks and traditional rules of functionalism as it is from being purely synthetic. Techno as perpetual motion machine, both above and underwater.
