Press Info (English):
The album version of LAMENT should be heard as a studio reconstruction of a work primarily designed to be performed live, rather than an official new Einstürzende Neubauten LP proper.

In truth, the piece can only be fully realised, as well as best experienced, in its physical embodiment, performed on or by founding member Andrew Unruh’s gigantic instruments and noise generating devices that visually evoke the horrors the work describes or embeds in the sounds they conjure from the filth and terror of the industrialised 20th century world at war with itself.

But in fulfilling what at first appears to be a surprise commission for such a formidable longtime outsider group, Einstürzende Neubauten transformed the earthy, idiosyncratic contents they mined from academic, state, music hall and internet archives with the help of their two researchers into a richly complex cycle of original and cover songs and performance pieces.

The music often originated in LAMENT’s storytelling needs, be it in terms of sounds used or compositions structured along First World War flow charts or scored from calendars of the involvement of the 20 plus countries embroiled in it. The way LAMENT plays off pre-existing and composed materials, pieces clipped together from historical records next to direct cover interpretations, or indeed their Frankenstein like construction of an ur-anthem/national hymn delivers a differently angled history of the war.

Finally, LAMENT opens Bargeld’s case that the First World War never ended – the interwar and postwar periods being essentially pauses for breath as the great military powers carry on their conflict at some remove in faraway wars fought by proxy.

[Playlist]: Second Mute Sampler compiled by NovaFuture

Info:
As you surely know our absolute favourite label is Mute, founded in 1978 by the legendary Daniel Miller.

The roster include(d) influential and important musical acts such as Depeche Mode, Erasure, Fad Gadget, Goldfrapp, Grinderman, Nitzer Ebb, Renegade Soundwave and Yazoo.

It was formed initially to release the Daniel Miller’s single “T.V.O.D.”/”Warm Leatherette” which became a underground hit.

One of Mute’s most famous act were Depeche Mode, which Daniel signed for a single after seeing them as support of Fad Gadget.

The label was always one of the pioneering labels developing and supporting new music styles. So they had a several sublabels with different genres and styles like novamute for techno and electronica, Future Groove for house music, Blast First for guitar and electronic experiments, The Fine Line for soundtracks, The Grey Area for re-issues.

Most of them are now defunct but they have a new sublabel, Liberation Technologies.

More recent acts are so different artists like Josh T. Pearson, Beth Jeans Houghton, Laibach, Erasure, VCMG, Big Deal, Zola Jesus, Liars and … just announced a few months ago New Order …. and many more

To show our love for the label we created a sampler of over 16 tracks and 90mins of newer stuff (from Mute, Mute US, sublabels). So enjoy!

Press Info:
Function and Vatican Shadow have combined forces on ‘Games Have Rules’ for Hospital Productions, simultaneously stripping back each producer’s more prevalent production elements – the dancefloor-focused techno structures of Function; the experimental cassette-roots of Vatican Shadow – to create an album of dynamic electronic ambient music, equal parts rhythmic and atmospheric.

As befitting what began life as an ’emotional acid’ album best suited for an after-hours home listening experience, Games Have Rules was created in the early hours at New York’s Hospital Productions and Berlin’s Inanimate Objects studios, helping imbue the record with a sense of night turning into day, and the shifting contrasts of dark and light the music evokes.

Although not created as the result of improvisation the album retains an effortless, free-flowing structure, while simultaneously introducing the traditional techno drum kit over the course of the record, deconstructing the ever-changing, looming presence of New York City’s skyline.

Ambient in the most traditional sense, Games Have Rules omits the top-heavy reverb saturation of so many modern releases and builds from the ground up with an arsenal hi-fi and lo-fi production techniques/equipment with a cinematic sequence over the arc of the record.

But whereas New York City has so often been depicted in film as a prison, Games Have Rules is an embracement of the city’s endless possibilities: the LP’s gatefold black and white image of The Empire State Building lit up at night from the inside; the ongoing stories of rise and decline lived out at it’s base.
